How can I create user accounts with restricted camera access?

SEiNG uses role-based access control (RBAC) to let you decide exactly which sites, cameras, features and pages each user can access. Instead of every user seeing the full camera estate, you assign a role — built-in or custom — and that role determines what they see the moment they log in. with Single Sign On, granting and revoking these roles is simple.

This is standard practice for any business managing CCTV across teams, sites or third parties, and will support your business’s’ efforts in achieving a Cyber Essentials Plus certification.

How role-based camera access works

RBAC is particularly useful for businesses and organisations that require different levels of access for various staff members. SEiNG offers two layers for roles: generic built in roles, which are assigned by default to each user, and custom roles if you want to fine-tune access.

Generic built-in roles

There are 3 base roles within SEiNG, defined as:

  • Admin: full access to cameras, features, roles, and permissions
  • Editor: can manage cameras and settings, but not manage users or permissions
  • Guest: can view cameras and footage, but not make changes

Custom roles

Layer on more fine grained access to your base roles by creating a custom role. Enable or disable specific functions, features, and pages for users. Once a custom role is created, it can easily be applied by Admin level users to one or multiple user accounts. This makes it easy to manage permissions across your organisation, ensuring consistent and appropriate access control. You can create as many custom roles as you need.

Role settings

Within your role set-up, there are a number of settings you can configure:

  • Role information: name, base role, and whether it’s an active role or not
  • Page access: toggle on or off access to pages, such as Cases, Dashboard, Analytics, or Sites
  • Time-based access: limit access to SEiNG to specific days or time windows
  • Feature access: enable features like PTZ, presets, remote configuration, download recording, and view (live or preview)

Applying roles to users

As a managed cloud video surveillance platform, we can set up your roles and users for you. But if you’d rather do it yourself, it is simple. When you add an account to SEiNG, just select from the drop down which role you’d like to assign. Read the guide here.

Benefits of Granular Access Control

Granular access control offers several benefits, including enhanced security and operational efficiency. Creating user accounts with restricted camera access and features ensures sensitive areas are accessible to designated personnel only. Additionally, this approach helps streamline user management and simplifies compliance with privacy regulations.
