What happens to my Cloud CCTV footage if the internet goes down?

SEiNG is designed to keep your footage safe and your system resilient — even during internet outages or loss of connection. Because every site is different, there are several ways SEiNG ensures continuity during outages:

Edge Recording (when supported)

Many modern IP cameras are equipped with built-in SD card slots or internal memory, allowing them to continue recording locally during an internet outage. This means your footage isn’t lost — it’s simply stored temporarily within the camera itself. Once connectivity is restored, SEiNG automatically syncs and uploads the buffered footage to the Cloud, ensuring your video history remains complete and continuous. Edge recording offers an additional layer of resilience, ideal for sites where internet reliability can fluctuate.

Cloud Gateway Option

For organisations with legacy cameras or that require uninterrupted recording and full peace of mind, SEiNG can include a Cloud Gateway — a compact, on-site device that provides local buffer storage. The gateway securely records and holds footage if the internet connection drops, then automatically uploads it to the SEiNG Cloud once the link is re-established. This ensures no gaps in your footage and offers a smart balance between local reliability and true cloud convenience.

Camera-Direct Cloud Upload

In many SEiNG deployments, cameras upload footage directly to the SEiNG Cloud without any intermediate hardware. This creates a streamlined, maintenance-free setup. If an internet outage occurs and your cameras don’t support edge storage, recording will pause temporarily. As soon as connectivity returns, the system resumes recording automatically — no manual resets or reconfiguration needed. For most businesses with stable broadband, this approach provides a simple, efficient, and cost-effective way to keep surveillance running smoothly. However, it does mean that footage could be lost during an outage so it may not be suitable for all businesses.

SEiNG has its own UK-based cloud facility, ensuring compliance, reliability, and data sovereignty. Manage internet outages and loss of connection with Edge.

Determining the best approach for your business

The best approach depends on your site environment, bandwidth capacity, and operational priorities. Our team helps you design the right configuration — whether that’s direct-to-cloud, edge-enabled, or hybrid — so you never have to worry about losing critical footage. Explore SEiNG

As part of your managed service, SEiNG continuously monitors device health and connectivity. If a camera or gateway goes offline, our support team is automatically alerted and will help troubleshoot and restore connection quickly, minimising downtime and data loss.
