Option 1: Remote access through a DVR or NVR
Traditional on-prem CCTV systems usually record footage onto a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) or Network Video Recorder (NVR) installed on-site. To access cameras remotely, users typically connect to that recorder using the manufacturer's mobile app or desktop software over an internet connection.
Because the recorder is the central point of the system, every remote request has to communicate with the hardware on-site. If the recorder is offline, has a network issue or loses power, remote access is usually unavailable until it's back online.
For smaller businesses with a single site, this may be perfectly adequate.
However, as systems grow, the drawbacks often become more noticeable.
If you have multiple sites, you'll often be managing separate recorders, fixed IP addresses for all sites, separate user accounts and sometimes completely different software platforms. Investigating an incident across several locations can mean logging in and out of multiple systems, each with its own interface and search tools.
Performance can also depend on the site's internet connection. If the recorder has limited upload bandwidth, live viewing and playback may be slow or lower in quality, particularly when several users are trying to access footage at the same time.
Many older systems also rely on manufacturer-specific software, which may require manual updates or only work reliably on certain devices. For IT teams, maintaining remote access across multiple recorders can become an ongoing administrative task.
That administrative burden also extends to cybersecurity. Accounts, firmware updates and remote access settings all need to be managed correctly to help keep the system secure. If updates are missed or access isn't properly controlled, it can increase the workload for IT teams and make maintaining a secure CCTV environment more challenging.
